OLD SCHOOL REGGAE.

Part of what eventually  became known as Reggae was originally called Blue Beat or Ska music.

My first relationship with this kind of music was in the sixties. At that time where there was a symbiotic relationship between at first, white mods (later hippies) and black West Indians. Both groups shared a common interest in “the herb” and us whites would find it easier to have a connection within the Jamaican community in order to score. There was a Jamaican who lived in the apartment next door in west London in 1967. His name was something like Rocket or Streak or something like that.  Every pay day which was a Friday night we would knock on his door and go in to do the usual score of some ganja from him. He would roll up a spliff light it up and hand it on to us while he continued getting dressed up to go out for the evening. Black suit, white shirt, colored tie, narrow lapels, pointed shoes. He would put on the turntable these Blue Beat records at ear splitting volume through huge distorted speakers. Sometimes after an hour or so we would arise from the floor to find him gone for the evening  and gone for another week.

Ska came to Britain with the West Indian immigrants of the early 1960’s and was initially known as ‘Blue Beat’ as some of the first records were released on the Blue Beat label.

The first international ska hit was ‘My Boy Lollipop’ by Millie Small which was in fact record in England in 1964 for Island Records. It is rumoured that a young Mod, Rod Stewart, was involved in the recording session – playing harmonica. Whatever the truth of this, ska was certainly very popular with the Mod crowd, who would often frequent West Indian nite clubs and could be seen as being the first and possibly only truly multicultural youth culture.

IT originated in Jamaica in the 1950’s, where American R&B artists like Fats Domino and Louis Jordan were very popular. Many Jamaican performers incorporated the 12 bar blues chord progressions and boogie bass lines of Fats Domino with African rhythms, placing emphasis on the offbeat. The new style of music became known as ska. One of the first people to record the ska rhythm was Ernest Ranglin.

Mods would also adopt some of the dances seen in these Jamaican clubs, and dances such as ‘the ska’ and ‘the blue beat swing’ became almost as popular as ‘the block’.

In the mid sixties the Flamingo Club in Soho was another club where whites and West Indians gathered. Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames were regulars and helped introduce this style to white audiences . HERE

Several ska hits followed through the 60’s including ‘Guns of Navarone’ by the Skatalites, ‘Rudy, A Message to You’ by Dandy Livingstone, ‘Liquidator’ by The Harry J Allstars and in 1969, ‘The Israelites’ by Desmond Dekker became the first Jamaican produced recording to become a number one hit in Britain. By the end of 60’s part of the Mod movement had evolved into Skinheads, who continued the racial mixing of the mods and their appreciation of Black music, whilst ska itself had evolved into Reggae.

NOTE:
On volume 7 of Spring Summer we start with three tracks by my favorite modern composer Hans Roedelius. A true painter of sound. After his pieces there is a passage called On the Bluff from a rare 1975 record called Neighborhoods by Ernie Hood. The album consisted of aural images of childhood through a haze of zither, synthesizer melodies, and foraged pedestrian sound.  Neighborhoods is both a score and documentary composed and directed by Hood to offer, in his words, joy in reminiscence.

CHAMBER JAZZ

Chamber Jazz is a genre of jazz that developed out of Cool Jazz sometime in the late fifties early sixties. Related to  West Coast Jazz as many players were by then settled in Los Angeles. Small acoustic based ensembles with some classical forms incorporated. Instrumentation was also eclectic with violin, oboe, sometimes tabla which led to early form of World Music or later in time New Age music.

These collections I find good for cocktail hour or dinner time. Just instrumentals.

Proponents of this style were Chico Hamilton, Paul Horn, Jimmy Giuffre, Buddy Collette, Jim Hall, Dave Brubeck and the Modern Jazz Quartet among many, many others.

 

The Crushed Velvet People

“Here come The Crushed Velvet people” 

There is a documentary here about The Incredible String Band.

It has a great comedic introduction and commentary from Billy Connelly (who was another  character from another interesting group from Scotland at the time- The Humblebums along with Gerry Rafferty). He described them walking by and said…“Here come The Crushed Velvet people” 

My opinion is they were The Beatles of the Folk world bringing in disparate influences both in music and in lyrics.  As Richard Thompson said it was “World Music” before the term was coined. They also shook up the rather staid folk music scene on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the movie- The Boat That Rocked (in the UK Pirate Radio) there is a scene at the end where ship is sinking and the John Peel character dives down to retrieve the only record album that mattered. What does he come up with ? The Layers of the Onion album by The Incredible String Band.

A very unique group and one that people either really hated or really loved. I think mostly misunderstood by Americans of the time as they were thrown in (especially at Woodstock) with the likes of  Jefferson Airplane, Canned Heat, Jimi Hendrix etc. Big arenas and big sounds were simply NOT their venue. They needed smaller intimate places where like the Bards of the Celtic of Old they could weave tales of the real and the imaginary with lyrics about people being stabbed by a “sword of willow”.
Above-Their very first album which pre dates the psychedelia of latter albums but is still a solid piece of Folk music.
Above-Their second but most popular album with the famous cover. The 5000 Spirits or The Layers Of The Onion.This one introduced Americans to them through the new fledgling Elektra Records.  Many influential people heard it and this  well known song from the album was covered by Judy Collins… The First Girl I Loved.
Above-Their third album strangely titled The Hangmans Beautiful Daughter continued their popularity.
Above– number four was a double album (originally) called The Wee Tam and The Big Huge which was a magical Mystery Tour extravaganza of sounds and words which I think was their baroque period before (just my opinion) becoming less interesting.

Here is my Mixcloud collection of British Old Folkies  which has many tracks by the ISB  and The Humblebums and many others from the early British Folk Rock scene of the sixties seventies.
Also they were stalwarts at John Peel´s late night Perfumed Garden show on Radio London in 1967.
